November Challenge – 2018 – Ki

Challenge Week 4

I most definitely did not earn an A this week…but I did bring my grade up from last week.

I got back on the ball with tracking stuff and did a much better job of meeting my goals.  I even earned a few extra credit points.

Good job, Ki!  You got back on track!

Why thank you, thank you very much!

Just a reminder for you, using a habit tracker each month totally helps with meeting your goals because, if you’re anything like me, you consider the check mark an accomplishment so you start working for check marks.

My Goals

Self Care

My self care goals were pretty simple: get up and weigh myself, brush my teeth, take my meds, eat enough, easy on the salt intake, log consumption, and brush my teeth again before bed.

I think I had a decent week with this category. I did not stay under the 2,300 mg of sodium on the first two days but I did the rest of the week.  I missed one day on consuming at least 1,000 calories.

I could’ve earned a point each for brushing my teeth all 7 days twice which makes 14 points available for that goal for the week. And then there was a point available, per day, for consuming 1,000 or more calories, staying under 2,300 mg of sodium, taking my meds, weighing myself, and logging my consumption. So for those 5 goals times 7 days, we get 35 points available to add to the 14 for brushing my teeth and the 2 for healthcare stuff.

For the entire 7 days of this week, I had a grand total of 50 possible points for the Self Care goal. I earned 43 points for this week. That’s an 86%, back up to a B!  Yay me!  So let’s break it down and take a look at what I accomplished.

Sunday

I weighed 246.8 pounds. I brushed my teeth and took my meds after breakfast. I ate way too many calories and did not stay under 2,300 mg of sodium. I made a real nice meal for my parent’s visit plus carrot cake for dessert to welcome them back home to Florida. They moved back here from Puerto Rico where they had retired before Hurricane Maria. The meal was nice and provided good leftovers for our meal preps for the week. But the carrot cake was an oh so guilty pleasure that threw me way overboard on the diet for the day. I’ll have to work extra hard to make up for it. I logged my consumption for the day. This earned 5 points for this category.

Monday

I weighed 246.7 pounds. I brushed my teeth and took my meds after breakfast. I ate at least 1,000 calories but did not stay under 2,300 mg of sodium. There was still some carrot cake leftover and just one piece of that throws me over my limits for the day. But I’m not going to rob myself from enjoying my carrot cake on the 2 or 3 times a year that I make it. I’ll just work extra hard to undo the damage it does to my progress. I logged my consumption for the day. This earned 5 points for this category.

Tuesday

I weighed 246.7 pounds. I brushed my teeth and took my meds after breakfast. I ate at least 1,000 calories and stayed under 2,300 mg of sodium. It feels great to see these numbers back down. I wouldn’t have gone over on Fat if I didn’t eat my salad today. How is that for ironic? And as it turns out, they announced this evening that all Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat and needs to be thrown out due to E. Coli. So hopefully I don’t get sick and tomorrow’s salads are now trash. That sucks and I’ll have to figure out what to do for food tomorrow as it’s the day before Thanksgiving and my planned meals are now garbage. I logged my consumption for the day. This earned 6 points for this category.

11 – 20 -18 – MyFitnessPal Stats

Wednesday

I weighed 245.5 pounds. I brushed my teeth and took my meds after breakfast. I did not eat at least 1,000 calories but I did stay under 2,300 mg of sodium. My dear sweet boy pulled prepped meals out of the refrigerator for the day while I slept! I didn’t think to do that and I didn’t ask him to. Apparently since I told him the salads were trash, he realized we were out of meals when he made his dinner for the evening. I love my baby. But…even with his being considerate, I didn’t eat enough. It was make cookies and pie day for Thanksgiving. I ate five cookies because…the chef has to taste test! And I spoiled my dinner. I brushed my teeth after dinner and logged my consumption for the day. This earned 6 points for this category .

11 – 21 -18 – MyFitnessPal Stats

Thursday

I weight 244.3! It’s always good when you walk into Thanksgiving Day weighing less than you did the day before. I was feeling pretty darn good. I brushed my teeth and took my meds after breakfast. I ate well over 1,000 calories and managed to stay under 2,300 mg of sodium as well. I brushed my teeth after dinner and logged my consumption for the day. I earned 7 points.

11 – 22 -18 – MyFitnessPal Stats

Friday

I weighed 243.8, still going down! I brushed my teeth and took my meds after breakfast. I consumed more than 1,000 calories and less than 2,300 mg of sodium. It was the yearly day of leftovers which I promptly turned into meal preps that went in the freezer. Delicious! I brushed my teeth before bed and logged my consumption for the day earning 7 points.

11 – 23 -18 – MyFitnessPal Stats

Saturday

I weighed 246.1, we’re going the wrong way! Must be the pumpkin pie. That’s okay, I’ll work it all back off. I brushed my teeth and took my meds after breakfast. I ate way more than 1,000 calories and stayed just under the 2,300 mg of Sodium. I brushed my teeth after dinner and logged my consumption for the day. Seven points.

Household Chores

I did good on household chores this week. I’ve had a set schedule with chores for maybe six months or so and have pretty well gotten into a routine. Some weeks I do really well, other weeks I skip them completely. Of course, the goal is to not skip them at all. This week, I did most of it before Wednesday because I knew I would be in pain after the Thanksgiving meal.  Also, I ended up tripling the amount of times I did dishes because of how much more I cooked this week.

So, for household chores, my goal is to do the dishes twice per week which means I could earn two points for that. I have 8 other chores with the goal of accomplishing them once per week so that’s another 8 points available which means I could’ve earned up to 10 points in this category for this week.

I earned a whopping 16 points for this category this week. That’s a 160%, awesome!  So let’s break it down and take a look at what I accomplished.

Sunday

I washed the dishes and cleaned the kitchen.

Monday

I washed more dishes.

Tuesday

I did not do chores on Tuesday.

Wednesday

I took the recycling out to the curb, washed the dishes, cleaned the kitchen, and did the laundry.

Thursday

I cleaned the dining rooms, swept and mopped the floors.

Friday

I washed the dishes.

Saturday

I washed more dishes, cleaned the kitchen after meal prep, and watered the plants.

Family

Family Love

For my Family goals, I had two goals to happen twice each during the month. That was family outings and family visits. So, if I did both during this week, I could’ve earned 4 points there.

I had two goals that I wanted to accomplish once per week. That was train a new command with my dog and give him a bath. So that would be two points possible here.

I had one goal, to grade papers, 5 times per week which would be 5 possible points, but my son did not go to school all 5 days this week as he had the week off for Thanksgiving.  Finally, I had a goal to converse with my son daily. So that would be 7 possible points, one for each day of the week.

For this category, I had a grand total of 13 possible points for the Family category. I earned 11 for this week. That’s an 84%.  I made it back up to a B. So let’s break it down and take a look at what I accomplished.

Sunday

My son and I bathed the dogs and talked about the Alzheimer’s disease and dementia syndrome and what the differences are between them. We talked about things that might happen for someone with those problems. My parent’s came to visit for lunch also. I earned 3 points for this category.

Monday

We talked about grocery shopping and meal prep for this week as our routine schedule is a little off due to my parent’s homecoming and the Thanksgiving holiday. I expect there will be quite a bit of food left over from Thanksgiving so that will supply some of our meal prepped meals as did our chicken dinner from Sunday’s visit. So grocery shopping this week will be fairly light.

Tuesday

My son and I discovered his Boxer is climbing the chain link fence to go next door and play with their dogs. While the neighbors don’t mind, we don’t want to allow this behavior to continue because the dogs on the other side are older and more aggressive, plus we don’t want her to climb over the fence that leads to freedom. So we discussed various options we have to prevent her from climbing the fence and what we are going to do in the interim.

Wednesday

My son and I talked about the desserts I was making for our Thanksgiving this year. He’s not a fan of pie so we agreed to make the snickerdoodle cookies he loves and he would get most of the cookies since the rest of us got pie. We talked about how to make them and why they were so gooey before adding a bit more flour. We talked about how they came out lighter and fluffier than I had previously made them. We also talked about the Christmas decorations. It is tradition in my family to put the Christmas decorations up the day after Thanksgiving. But I knew I would be hurting and I thought it would be nice to have them up for Thanksgiving since we were actually having guests over this year. So we talked about how he could help me most and what he could do decoration wise while I cooked.

Thursday

We talked about the dogs and how we were going to handle things throughout the day while my parents were over with their dog. Our dogs just met their dog and one of ours isn’t warming up to him very quickly, so we have to keep them separated for now until they get used to each other. My son and I talked about how we would manage that throughout the day and what needed to happen to keep things calm. We had a family visit on Thursday for Thanksgiving since my parents came over. Two points here!

Friday

My son and I watched a new show together and we talked about why we liked it better than another show that we used to watch together. We talked about the nuisance neighbors beating on our fence and throwing toys over into our yard and taunting our dogs. We talked about our plans for Sunday as my parents asked to take us to lunch and to see their new house. My son and I also went to dinner while out running errands. Two points!

Saturday

My son and I talked about what to do with his dog climbing over our chain link fence to get to our neighbor’s house and play with their dogs. We talked about why it’s important to stop her from doing that even though they welcome her over and we talked about what we were going to do to stop it.

Social

Social Butterfly

Interestingly, I may be a little more social than I thought. Or at least I am this month.

I had only set two goals on this one, both to be accomplished once during the entire month.

I don’t really go out with friends like a lot of people do. Beck and I get together maybe once a year and do something. Other than that, I pretty much keep to myself. I don’t like traffic, I don’t like drama, and my patience for stupidity is very low so I keep myself pretty much in isolation so my stress levels stay low.

Beck and I had already gotten together so that point wasn’t available this week but I still had some adult time with my neighbors which earned me an extra credit point since this goal was already met.

I did earn one point. I had some more adult time with my neighbors talking to them about my property manager and the homeowner of the house I live in. They showed me their new gun safe and told me about the sale and we talked about why it was important with them having two new babies in the house, one of them a toddler that can get into drawers now.

Hobbies

Hobbies

I only had four goals in this category. With it being hobbies, it’s something that we do when we have time and we feel like it. The universe has to be just right in order for these hobby things to actually happen.

Each of those goals was to be earned at least one time during the month because…yeah…stars have to align and stuff.

So there were only four points possible in this category for this week and that’s only if I managed to complete all four goals in just one week.

I did not do anything hobby related this week.

Exercise

Exercise

The only goal I set for this category was to achieve 30 active minutes per day as a consequence of losing the October Killer Cardio Challenge.

I did miss one day of being active this week.  I talked it over with Beck and I’m going to make up the day on December 1st.  While it isn’t a consecutive 30 days of active minutes, I still achieved the desired 210 active minutes for the week, I just missed one day of the 30 minutes and did that much more on other days of the same week.  So as far as redeeming myself from October’s challenge, as long as I don’t miss anymore days in November and I achieve 30 active minutes on December 1st, I will be square with the house again…fully redeemed.

For this category, I had a grand total of 7 possible points for the Exercise category. I earned 6 for this week. That’s an 85%, still a B!

11-24-2018 – Active Minutes

Sunday

I spent Sunday in the kitchen cooking for half the day and then my parents visited the other half. By the time they left, I was wiped out and in pain so I did not work out. I should have done my 30 minute routine first thing in the morning to make sure I could accomplish it. But I did not. This was a miss.

Monday

I completed the 25 minute Just One More routine with Coach Rusty on my FitRadio app. The Warm Up and Cool Down periods gave me the additional minutes needed to reach my goal of 30 active minutes.

Tuesday

I completed the 30 minute Easy Breezy routine with Coach Maria on my FitRadio app.

Wednesday

I completed the 30 minute Conquer It routine with Coach Emily on my FitRadio app.

Thursday

I did not work out on Thanksgiving Day. However, since I was the only one preparing the meal, I was able to log 52 active minutes that day. Score!

Friday

Despite how much pain I was in when I woke up, I still managed to do my workout in the morning after I woke up. In fact, I did it a 30 minute cardio routine while snapping beans for my meal prep.

Saturday

I was still in pain but I managed to get my 30 minute workout done first thing in the morning while watching the dogs play outside.

Work

Work

This category is a big one and contains the most goals. I have a lot that I want to do in this category each week. One of the goals was a once during the month goal which I completed in the first week. That was the gamification presentation. So that point is not available to be earned anymore this month.

I had two goals that I wanted to complete 5 times per week, access requests and work inbox. But this was a short holiday week so there were only 3 days that I worked so six points available instead of ten.

One goal, TMDC Email was set to accomplish 4 times per week which would have been 4 points possible. FS Email made 3 points possible by accomplishing it 3 times per week and FS Post would have given 2 points if accomplished twice per week.

Personal email was to be accomplished daily which would have made 7 points possible for this goal. All of the other 7 goals were to be accomplished once per week, making 7 more points possible.

So for this category, I had a grand total of 29 possible points for the Work category.

I earned 17 for this week. That’s a 58%, yikes!  This grade dropped! That is not a passing grade. I need to do better on this one…big time!

So let’s break it down and take a look at what I accomplished.

Sunday

I cleared out my personal email and posted my Sunday Stats post.

Monday

First thing in the morning, I cleared out my personal email and my work inbox. I worked the access requests and compiled and sent the F Report for the week. I posted my Monday Motivation post here on ForgetSkinny.

Tuesday

First thing in the morning, I cleared out my personal email and my work inbox. I worked the access requests and compiled and sent the PR Report for the week.

Wednesday

First thing in the morning, I cleared out my personal email and my work inbox. I worked the access requests and compiled and sent the U Report for the week.

Thursday

Happy Thanksgiving!!! No work at all today as it is a holiday and I truly took the day off for a change.

Friday

I cleared out my personal email but did not do any other work as I was in bed pretty much most of the day recovering from the holiday.

Saturday

I cleared out my personal email but did not do any other work as I was in bed pretty much most of the day recovering from the holiday.

So what’s my overall grade for the week? Well, there were 109 points possible this week. I earned only 94 points for the week. That is 86% which is back up to a B grade. I am totally happy with my score this week. I want an A so lets see how I finish off this challenge.

Let’s see how I do this coming week.

Remember, forget skinny…train to be a fit badass!

    1. Hi Sujandar,
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback. You are the reason I share my progress each day! I firmly believe that people on this journey get better results when they hold themselves accountable and allow their peers to offer support. Your feedback motivates me to continue sharing my results and hoping to inspire others.

  2. Hey Ki,

This is a very detailed article!!! I know from experience that if you want to lose weight you must be VERY detailed and honest with yourself. It does not good to try and fool yourself. Like I have said I enjoyed reading your article because you not only counted what you ate but what you did. I have always thought social life plays a Big part.

    Elaine

    1. Hi Elaine,
Thank you for the feedback! I agree, holding ourselves accountable is one of the first steps to a successful journey on just about anything we set out to do but most especially for a weight loss journey. Beck and I both are still in the very early stages of this journey where we’re putting ourselves in check so to speak and getting a good understanding of where we’re going wrong so that we can begin new healthy habits. It’s so easy to say, “I’m doing everything right but I just can’t lose weight!” When you really get detailed and start tracking each little detail, you start seeing the big picture and understanding exactly where the extra pounds are coming from. Only then can you begin to change those actions and start making progress.

I’m super thrilled that you enjoyed my article, thank you so much for taking the time to do so.

      ~Ki
